Move From MSIX To VeloPack

Use this procedure once for each installed SkatingApp, SkatingApp Scoreboard, or SkatingApp PhotoFinish MSIX package. Do not run the MSIX and VeloPack editions of the same application side by side.

Before You Start

  • Obtain the signed VeloPack installer for each application being migrated.
  • Finish active races, exports, photo transfers, and other writes.
  • Record any custom database, hardware, network-share, and event-folder settings.
  • Sign in as the Windows user who normally runs the application.

1. Close The Applications

Close SkatingApp, Scoreboard, and PhotoFinish. Use Task Manager to confirm that SkatingApp.exe, SkatingScoreboard.exe, and SkatingPhotoFinish.exe are no longer running.

2. Locate The Installed MSIX Packages

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-AppxPackage | Where-Object Name -In @(
    '82511115-7b04-4d03-9a10-46ad9a8b42e8',
    '20845d4a-a098-4060-a80e-4f69e3d6b8b7',
    '392b0479-467d-4ece-95f2-8f51f96684a1'
) | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName, PackageFamilyName, InstallLocation

Record the returned PackageFamilyName values. Do not construct or guess package-family paths. If you need to inspect package-private data, use the returned value under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages before uninstalling.

Verified SkatingApp MSIX releases store the migration-sensitive files in the shared persistent folder rather than package-private storage:

%APPDATA%\SkatingApp

Confirm that this folder contains the files used on your workstation, including:

  • SkatingApp.config
  • SkatingScoreboard.config
  • SkatingPhotoFinish.config
  • license.lic
  • Template
  • Template\Images

Some files or folders may not exist if that application or feature has never been configured.

3. Back Up Persistent Data

  1. Open Windows Run with Windows key + R.
  2. Enter %APPDATA% and select OK.
  3. Copy the complete SkatingApp folder to a location outside %APPDATA%, such as an encrypted backup drive.
  4. Confirm that the copied folder can be opened and contains the expected config, license, template, and image files.
  5. Back up event databases and user-selected event folders separately if they are not already covered by normal database and event backup procedures.

Do not use a folder under %LOCALAPPDATA%\SCGVisual.* or any VeloPack current directory as the backup destination.

4. Uninstall MSIX

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the MSIX edition of the application.
  3. Select Uninstall and wait for it to finish.
  4. Repeat for the other applications being migrated.
  5. Run the PowerShell command from step 2 again and confirm that the selected packages are no longer returned.

Do not delete %APPDATA%\SkatingApp.

5. Install VeloPack

  1. Check the installer's Digital Signatures tab and confirm that the signature is valid and belongs to the expected publisher.
  2. Run the signed Setup.exe for one application.
  3. VeloPack normally starts the installed application automatically. Do not start a second copy. If files must be restored, close the automatically started application immediately without changing settings.
  4. Repeat for each application being migrated.

See Install SkatingApp With VeloPack for installer names and installation locations.

6. Restore And Verify

If the existing files remained in %APPDATA%\SkatingApp, do not overwrite them unnecessarily. If files are missing or incorrect, confirm that all automatically started applications are closed and restore the required files from the backup. Then start each application from its Start menu shortcut.

Verify:

  1. The expected license is active.
  2. The database connection points to the correct server and database.
  3. Timing, scoreboard, and photo-finish device settings are present.
  4. Custom print templates and images are available.
  5. Existing event and export paths still work.
  6. A current log file appears under %APPDATA%\SkatingApp.
  7. Settings > Apps > Installed apps shows the VeloPack-installed application.
  8. The application's manual update check completes without changing persistent settings.

Keep the backup until the application has completed a normal event workflow and at least one update. If verification fails, close the applications before restoring files again or contacting support.
